The Operating System
The Linux operating system was developed by Linus Torvalds in the early 1990's.
It is a secure system which is unaffected by the many viruses that affect other commonly used operating systems.
If used with a good password, it provides your best guarantee against penetration by hackers.
There are many different distributions of the Linux operating system.
The most commonly used distribution (distro) used by SCCC members is Mandriva Linux.
Within the Club there are also a number of members who regularly use Ubuntu distro.
Some members are familiar with the PCLinux distro, the Red Hat Fedora and also the Suse distro.
Each of these distros have their their pros and cons which attract their various adherents.
The graphical desktop layout is fairly simple to follow and, in many respects, is similar in appearance to Windows or Mac.
Come over to the Linux section for a demo next time you visit the SCCC.
