Help At Technology Education Centres Caloundra and Buderim
When members attend a meeting at either of these centres and have a problem they would like assistance with, they should make their request known to the desk persons. There are a number of Club members who have expertise in certain subjects who are best able to help with problems for members. The desk persons know who of the volunteer helpersare present and available and best able to help the member requiring help and can direct the member to the volunteer. Members may be offered help by someone they sit down beside but sometimes this well meaning member, although knowing how to do the task for themselves, does not know how to pass on the knowledge required by the enquiring member. With computers there are a number of methods to do many of the tasks required, and not all members are aware of all of these. If after receiving assistance from a volunteer, you are still not sure of what you should do, explain this to the desk persons and ask if another volunteer can help you. Another person may be able to explain the problem differently and clear the matter for you. It does not help you or the Club if you leave the Club being not satisfied with help received. It must be remembered that the volunteer with the expertise needed that you received help from at one meeting may not be at all meetings.
Club Web Site – Members Forum Area
(http://www.sccc.org.au) If you have not already registered to have access to the Members' Only areas at the Club website, you can do that by clicking on the Members Only > Members Signup link/ Then click on the Register Now link and follow the instructions. After you submit your application you will be sent a password to the email address you supplied. Be aware that confirming your membership status is a manual process and it may be 12 to 24 hours before you will be able to access the Members' Only areas of the website. The Forum area contains detailed instructions on how to use the Club Forum. These instructions can be printed directly from the Website by clicking on “Print this Post". Doing so would help members to familiarize themselves with the use of the Forum. If you are having trouble using the forum please come along to a Club meeting and ask Jay Le Boutillier (9:00am – 9:30am Caloundra), Heather Atkinson (Buderim ) or Jean Lear (Buderim and Caloundra) for help.

SCAMwatch email alert: Beware of carbon price scams [SEC=UNCLASSIFIED] Added May 12 (See – http://www.scamwatch.gov.au/content/index.phtml/itemId/947150)
Beware of carbon price scams
SCAMwatch is warning consumers and businesses to be on the look out for carbon price scams.
How these scams work
Carbon price scams may come in a number of forms, targeting consumers and businesses:
Beware of phone calls seeking your personal banking details to pay carbon ‘tax’ compensation into your bank account. These are likely to be scam calls.
Scammers may also set up fake websites which look very similar to official Australian Government websites. The sites may ask you to enter your personal or financial details, or offer to sell you fake carbon credits.
Protect yourself
The Australian Government will never call you to ask for your bank account details or to offer you carbon price compensation. Government services are never paid via wire transfer.
The Australian Government website www.australia.gov.au is a safe portal for finding government services.
Be alert to scam survey calls which ask for personal, business or financial details. Hang up immediately if you receive a phone call out of the blue:
-
asking for your bank account or personal details,
-
claiming you need to pay or transfer money to receive a compensation payment or tax payment, or
-
offering to sell you carbon credits or permits for a carbon pricing mechanism or emissions trading scheme.
Never provide or confirm your personal or business details over the phone unless you made the call using contact details you found yourself and you trust the information.
If you think that a call might be a scam hang up and check by using official contact details which you have found independently. Never use phone numbers, email addresses or websites provided by the caller.
Never enter your credit card or banking details on a website unless you have checked it is authentic and secure. Legitimate websites which ask you to enter sensitive personal or business details are commonly encrypted to protect your details.
This is usually identified by the use of “https:” rather than “http:” at the start of the internet address.
This can also be identified by a closed or unbroken key or padlock icon at the bottom right corner of your browser window.
If the ‘s’ is missing or there is an open padlock or broken key icon, your information may not be secure and the website could be a scam site.
If you think you have provided your account details to a scammer, contact your bank or financial institution immediately.
Businesses, make sure you only deal with people you know and trust. Avoid having a large number of staff authorised to make orders or pay invoices. This will reduce the risk of your business paying for something that it is not required or is not legitimate.
Report
You can report scams to the ACCC via the report a scam page on SCAMwatch or by calling 1300 795 995.

SCCC Information Telephone Line
Members are reminded that the Club Information Line (54921005) will not be answered on the days of the Meetings at Caloundra (Sats between approx 7.30 am and 1.00 pm) at Buderim (Thus between approx 11.30 am and 5.00 pm) at Yandina (Weds between approx 11.15 am and 5.00 pm.) There is an answering machine on the line and members are asked to leave a message at times when the call is unanswered, and the call will be returned. If you do not require a call back please leave a message to that effect. The telephone number of the caller can be checked on my return, but it is time wasting to call the number back and be told “It does not matter – I called someone else” Privacy of members details prevents the passing of telephone numbers or e mail addresses of members to other members of the Club. The telephone numbers of members of the Committee are published in each edition of the Bits'N'Bytes and so are available there for members.
Bulletin compiled by SCCC Inc Administrator Jean Lear For any further information about the above content please telephone the Club Information Line : 54921005 (Leave a message if the call is not answered) or e mail to – sccc@internode.on.net
